Last updated on November 4th, 2026 at 11:38 am

Top consulting firms in India include strategy specialists, broad professional-services networks and firms focused on technology, operations or particular sectors. Therefore, compare top consulting firms in India using the work you want to do. This guide compares firms and role types; it is not an audited ranking of prestige, compensation or hiring probability.

How this shortlist is organised

First, we selected firms with official evidence of Indian operations or services and grouped them by the work a candidate should investigate. However, the list is not exhaustive, and the order does not represent a scored league table. For example, service lines within the same organisation can recruit for very different skills.

McKinsey, BCG and Bain are commonly grouped as MBB. By contrast, the Big Four refers to Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG, which are broader professional-services networks. Therefore, a specific strategy team, transactions team, technology role and audit position should not be treated as identical simply because they share a network name.

For a useful comparison, read the exact service and job description, identify the employing entity and check the location. However, a global firm’s India presence does not imply every practice or role operates in every city.

In other words, these links establish a research starting point, not a promise of an open vacancy. A role-specific link may close; therefore, use the firm’s official careers navigation for current opportunities. Never pay someone merely for claiming to guarantee a job at a named firm.

How to compare top consulting firms in India by role

For example, strategy work often requires structured problem solving, market reasoning and concise recommendations. Similarly, finance and transactions work may require accounting, valuation, financial modelling or due diligence. In addition, technology and implementation work can require systems, data, engineering or change-delivery skills.

However, experience requirements differ. For example, a graduate entry route, an experienced industry specialist and a technical role can have different selection processes within one firm. Do not rely on an unsupported universal acceptance rate or assume every applicant faces the same interview format.

Target workEvidence to prepare
Commercial strategyA structured market or profitability case with clear assumptions
Finance or transactionsAn auditable model, accounting reasoning and sensitivity analysis
Operations improvementA process map, baseline, options and a measurable evaluation plan
Data or technology consultingRelevant technical work plus an explanation of business value

Instead, treat employer assessments and role requirements as current evidence. A list of fashionable skills should not replace the advertised criteria.

Worked consulting case: explain a profit decline

For example, a fictional business sells 10,000 units at ₹1,000 each. Variable cost is ₹600 per unit and fixed costs are ₹20 lakh. Revenue is ₹100 lakh, contribution is ₹40 lakh and operating profit is ₹20 lakh.

In the next period, volume rises to 11,000 units, price stays ₹1,000, variable cost rises to ₹650 and fixed costs rise to ₹22 lakh. However, revenue increases to ₹110 lakh, while contribution is ₹38.5 lakh and operating profit falls to ₹16.5 lakh.

To explain the result, bridge the ₹3.5 lakh decline using a stated sequence. First, volume adds 1,000 × ₹400 = ₹4 lakh at the original contribution per unit. Next, the ₹50 unit-cost rise across 11,000 units reduces profit by ₹5.5 lakh. Finally, higher fixed costs reduce it by another ₹2 lakh. Net change: +₹4 lakh − ₹5.5 lakh − ₹2 lakh = −₹3.5 lakh.

Bridge itemProfit change
Starting profit₹20 lakh
Volume effect at old unit contribution+₹4 lakh
Variable-cost effect at new volume−₹5.5 lakh
Fixed-cost increase−₹2 lakh
Ending profit₹16.5 lakh

Next, ask why costs rose. However, do not jump from arithmetic to an unsupported recommendation to cut staff or increase prices. Instead, investigate sourcing, mix, productivity, capacity and demand evidence.

Build a credible application

Finally, use an accurate CV, explain your personal contribution to projects and show how you checked your work. Therefore, if a project is fictional, say so. For example, a strong teaching case is useful without pretending it was a paid consulting engagement.

Our corporate finance guide and ratio-analysis worked cases support finance-oriented preparation. For a requirements-led role, compare the skills in our business analyst course guide. These are different preparation paths, not guaranteed routes into any particular firm.

Finally, verify vacancies and selection instructions through official channels. Avoid stale salary tables, unexplained prestige rankings and invented insider interviews. Therefore, the objective is to demonstrate relevant reasoning, not to repeat claims that cannot be checked.

Frequently asked questions

Which are the MBB consulting firms?

McKinsey & Company, Boston Consulting Group and Bain & Company are commonly grouped as MBB. The label does not imply identical roles or selection processes.

Are consulting and investment banking the same?

No. Consulting covers advice and implementation across business problems. Investment banking includes specific capital-raising and transaction services. Some skills overlap, but roles and employers must be assessed separately.

Which consulting firm is best for freshers?

There is no universal answer. Compare the actual graduate role, required skills, learning opportunity, location and selection criteria. Verify current openings on official careers sites.

Is it the Big Four or the Big Five?

The current familiar Big Four professional-services grouping is Deloitte, PwC, EY and KPMG. MBB is a different grouping: McKinsey, BCG and Bain. Labels such as “top five” or “top eight” in list articles are not one universal official classification.
